Every Kiss

Tasha Ivey

After witnessing Makenna’s journey to find herself again, Callie is reminded of her own struggles with love. No, Wes wasn’t always the easy going guy that he is today. He was moody and unpredictable in the worst of ways, and she was certain to call him out on it every chance she got. Looking back, she’s amazed at how much their lives have changed since they met.

Before tragedy shook them to the very core of their lives. Before her dream career began. And before Wes wasn’t a broody jerk with a closet full of personalities.

Yes, just four years ago, everything was different…

Makenna and Shane are just a couple of lovesick college students, and Callie is doing her best to keep up with the demands of her junior year. Life is boring, and she is totally fine with that. But boring flies right out the window the day Makenna cons Callie into helping with Shane’s brother’s birthday party. She expects a gangly pimple-faced teenager, but Wes is far from it. He is temperamental and opinionated, but he is also incredibly hot and thoroughly enjoys pushing her buttons. And she pushes his right back.

Even though their undeniable attraction draws them to one another, Wes is clear with Callie about one thing. Relationships are off limits. Friendship is all he has to offer, unless of course, Callie is willing to add a few benefits to that. He works hard to keep the reasons for his aversion hidden, but secrets have a way of making themselves known sometimes, no matter how deep you bury them.

Two of those secrets hold the key to unlocking Wes’ fears of the ultimate betrayal. And the other secret has Callie falling even deeper than she ever dreamed.

But she’s unsure of one thing . . . is she enough to save him from himself?

Author bio:

Tasha Ivey is a literature fanatic, whose love for the written word fostered her development into the writer she has become. A lover of an extremely erratic mixture of literature, she has been influenced by authors from Jane Austen and E.M. Forster to Charlaine Harris and Alyson Noel. But her biggest influence and literary hero? Nicholas Sparks. Aside from writing, since she doesn't have anything other than a shriveled up prune on the left side of her brain, she prefers to spend her time being creative in other ways like painting, cake decorating, and various types of crafts. That is, if the constant voices streaming through her head allow her to stop making up stories for a while. Lucky for her, she has a huge supportive family, including her amazing husband and two kids, who doesn't complain too much when she hangs out with her characters more than she does with them. Sophie, the dog, however . . . she does complain. A lot.

Author’s Take on the Victor Sorenson from Beautiful Surrender

By Priscilla West

If there’s one thing that readers should know about Vincent Sorenson, it’s that you can’t judge him by his cover. Vincent’s a daredevil, no one can deny that, but the media definitely focuses on this element of his personality at the expense of the others. There’s always some news story about how he jumped off a helicopter to ski on top of Mount Kilimanjaro or took the entire Brazilian women’s swimming team on speedboat tour of the Amazon river.

The real Vincent is a lot more complex. Although he clearly enjoys taking risks, he’s hardly the irresponsible playboy that many think he is. Vincent is a shrewd and ambitious businessman who doesn’t separate work from play. Since he’s the CEO as well as the brand for his extreme sports company SandWorks, the controversy around his piercings, tattoos and “extra-curricular activities” just happen to bring them a lot of publicity.

Behind Vincent’s public face is someone who cares deeply about the people close to him. When he was younger, something happened to his family that really forced him to re-examine his priorities. Though he never gave up his thrill-seeking ways, now he is very protective of those he cares about.

Something that very few know about Vincent is that he once survived a shark attack. While surfing off the coast of Oahu in Hawaii, he stayed in the water a little too long past dark, when the sharks start to become more active. Vincent suffered a bite on his calf, but was luckily able to swim back to shore before he was seriously injured. Now, the scars are covered by a tattoo, fittingly, of a shark. Though Vincent doesn’t tell this story anymore, he used to answer questions about his scars with: “Oh, this bite? No big deal, you should have seen the bite mark on the shark!”

Forbidden Surrender
The minute I saw Vincent Sorenson, I knew he was trouble. Billionaire. Bad boy. And dangerously sexy. He was everything I craved, and nothing I needed.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t just avoid him. The higher ups at my company decided they needed his business, and I was on the team to bring him in. Vincent Sorenson didn’t seem as interested in business as he was in me, but I knew that was a door better left unopened. If I got involved with him, it would only unearth the pain I spent years trying to bury.

I thought I had it under control, but I seriously underestimated Vincent’s seductive charm and silver-tongue. I would soon find out how delicious it would feel to let myself fall into this forbidden surrender.
Secret Surrender
I knew that giving in to Vincent Sorenson was a risk, but it was one I was willing to take. I had hidden my heart for so long and for the first time in a long time, Vincent was close to breaking down the walls.

When a trip to Vincent’s exclusive private island reveals the real Vincent underneath the layers of suave nonchalance, I thought we were close to the start of something special.

Just when things were looking up for us, I would discover the one secret that Vincent never intended for me to find.

Title: Testament
Author: Katie Ashley
Published: Nov. 22, 2013

Five years ago, catastrophic earthquakes, massive floods, and violent storms caused the collapse of the global economy and a massive political upheaval. In a world thrown into chaos after The Great Fall, greedy CEO’s enforce the Golden Rule—whoever has the most gold, rules the land. Any hint of rebellion against the domineering government ends in either death or imprisonment.

Fiery and beautiful Cadence O’Bryant has trouble keeping silent against the new order, a trait that often lands her in trouble. Having lost her parents to rebellion, her life now is about survival. She despises the new order of life and wishes for time to turn back to when life held order, and love was a possibility, not an impossible dream. Her worst nightmare comes in the form of the Emperor’s decree—all young women are to compete in a competition of beauty, intelligence, and most of all obedience, for his son, Kellan’s, hand in marriage. Cadence fears not only to lose herself to the male dominated society that now prevails, but also that hers and her brother, Griffin’s, secret will be revealed, which would be a death sentence.

Determined and handsome Micah Greene harbors an even deeper secret than the fact he is in love with his best friend’s sister, Cadence. The secret is one his father died to protect, but it’s also one that unites him to Cadence and their cause. On the eve of their separation, Micah reveals his heart to Cadence. But is it too late? Is it possible he might lose the woman he loves to his nemesis, Kellan Quinn, the Emperor’s son.

Will Cadence be chosen by Kellan, or will she be able to choose her future? Will Kellan’s sexy good looks and promise of stability tempt Cadence to fall for the future Emperor and hurt her one true friend. Passion is burning, but for whom will it burn the brightest for?

As revolution brews in the province, love may need to take a back seat. Will Cadence have the option to love either man, or will she have to fight for everything she’s ever loved, including her freedom?

A flicker of the red velvet curtain gave me a peek at the enormous crowd. My stomach instantly lurched and fluttered. No, no, no! I couldn’t allow myself to get nervous. Being nervous would break my concentration, and I couldn’t let anything do that. I had to focus.

Of course, being slightly nervous didn’t help my sometimes klutziness. Since I hadn’t been in heels in years, I hadn’t thought to take the proper precautions like scuffing them. The moment my heels hit the freshly waxed stage, I skidded. When I tried to gain my footing, my legs ended up sliding back in forth like I was on snow skis while my arms flew out to protect myself in case I fell. Icy embarrassment pricked at my skin as I quickly recovered.

“Very graceful,” Chandra muttered behind me.

I jerked my chin up and chose to ignore her. Instead, it took every fiber within me to concentrate on making it to my mark on the stage. As soon as I found my spot, I gazed out into the packed crowd. My eyes skittered across the unfamiliar faces, desperately seeking out Griff or Micah. Finally, I found them in the fourth row of the reserved family section. Just the sight of their faces sent calm washing over me.

My eyes were drawn to the first row where Kellan sat outfitted in a tux with a blood red rose in the lapel. He appeared anything but thrilled at the proceedings. His eyes locked with mine, and he arched a blond eyebrow almost mockingly. It took my mind a moment to process what had just happened. He didn’t do it to any of the other girls who were desperately trying to make eye contact with him. So why did he do it to me? I mean, we barely knew each other. The day he’d wrapped up my hand was the longest conversation we had ever had. So instead of diverting my eyes like I should, I smirked at him. I mean, who was he to look at me like that?

One by one we were called to Guy, the host. Each girl tried as best she could to make the most of her walk down the stage. Everything hinged on impressing Kellan and Richard with beauty and charm. I doubted the interview portion mattered at all.

As each girl stood beside Guy, he posed inane questions about what makes a good wife or what does a woman have to give the world. They appeared to be the same question just posed in different ways. I don’t know why I was surprised. After all, they were looking for obedient, if not vapid answers, from a pretty face.

Finally, it was my turn. I drew in a deep breath and strode confidently down the stage. I locked eyes with Griff, and he bobbed his head encouragingly. Any nervousness I might have felt dissipated.

Guy smiled at me. “Cadence, what do you feel a woman’s place is in the world?”

I shifted on my feet. Mentally, I had been preparing for this type of question with each girl who had been called. I could recite word for word what I knew they wanted to hear. But that wasn’t an option. Laurel’s words echoed in my mind, ‘Richard may want a woman to be seen and not heard, but I know Kellan doesn’t.’

An old memory flashed in my mind. It was saying my mother had on the bulletin board in her office at the university. Something about woman’s place was in the house, but it was the White House, State House, and House of Representatives. Even though those things didn’t exist anymore, it was something I could work from. I drew back my shoulders and smiled convincingly. “Oh, I believe a woman’s place is in the house.”

Guy leaned forward, his expression bent on urging me to continue.

“Well, I believe a woman belongs in every government and financial house in the land. One only has to look at history to see the great contributions women once made.”

“But surely—” he tried interrupting, but I plowed right on ahead.

“At one time, women held degrees in subjects like law and medicine. They healed the sick and fought for the rights of others. They gave of themselves beyond their front doors. I believe it was once said that behind every great man, there was a greater woman.”

Guy paled under his thick coating of stage makeup. He twisted the cards in his hands while casting a worried glance at Richard. “Well, uh, yes, that’s true, but at the same time, our world fell. Women are needed for more important things like procreating our new race.”

I smiled sweetly. “That is true.” I locked eyes with Richard. “And I hope to have a house full of children someday,” I remarked, playing off the ‘house’ pun of my question. His dark expression lightened at my response while nervous laughter twittered around him.

“So, um, thank you Cadence.”

“And thank you, Guy,” I replied, with the goofy smile still plastered on my face.

We were then herded backstage to await our fate. As other girls primped and preened in front of the lighted mirrors, I wrung my hands and paced the floor. Had I done the right thing by following Laurel’s advice? Or was my potentially feminist rant a deal-breaker for Richard?

    E-Book On-Sale 11/26/13 (9780062304742); Print Edition 12/10/13 (9780062304834)
We’re Hung Up on this Buckle-Winning Contemporary Romance Debut by T.J. Kline!
Every November, millions of Americans turn out from daily life to participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The goal is to try their hand at writing 50,000 words in one month. (“Try” being a practiced rodeo term, a description of a cowboy or cowgirl’s grit, determination, fitness, stamina and resilience. You’ve gotta have try if you are going to partake in NaNoWriMo!)
When Avon Books sponsored a romance writing component during #NaNo2012, thousands of submissions flooded the editors’ in-boxes. One brought home the buckle: RODEO QUEEN by T.J. Kline. Editor Tessa Woodward explains, “A fabulous contemporary romance; it’s about coyboys and the rodeo ladies who are queens of their hearts. Who could be surprised that I’d be roped right in?” The author made the rodeo romance plot really work for her – this is a showground that Kline has extensive insight into, having been raised to compete in rodeo and rodeo queen competitions from the age of 14 onwards. Her knowledge of the sport and culture absolutely bedazzle her book.
Over the course of the past year, Tessa worked closely with T.J., becoming her flankman, showing the new romance author the ropes. The effort of their partnership is a bronc-busting, barrel-racing Western contemporary that will thrill fans of Lori Wilde, Linda Lael Miller and Linda Howard. The plot weaves between ranch and rodeo, spotlighting a gutsy, determined rodeo queen who works magic training horses, and the hardened cowboy who has vowed never to trust again. There’s passion, tempestuous love triangles, tons of dallying around. RODEO QUEEN is the most fun you can lasso up in the reading arena!
The Avon team highly recommends this dynamite romance – it’s definitely worth a go-round!

    About the Author:
    T. J. Kline was raised competing in rodeos and Rodeo Queen Competitions since the age of 14 and has thorough knowledge of the sport as well as the culture involved. She has written several articles about rodeo for small periodicals, as well as a more recent how-to article for RevWriter, and has published a nonfiction health book and two inspirational fiction titles under the name Tina Klinesmith. She is also an avid reader and book reviewer for both Tyndale and Multnomah. In her spare time, she can be found laughing hysterically with her husband, children, and their menagerie of pets in Northern California.

A Q&A Session with Avon Impulse’s NaNoWriMo Superstar!

You wrote your debut novel, RODEO QUEEN, during NaNoWriMo. One month, 50,000 words. Can you describe the process? You would expect that writing during NaNoWriMo would simply be a matter of making time to sit at the computer and just typing away but it isn't. There are so many games that your mind plays on you: everything from finding any sort of distraction other than writing to telling you you're no good, even completely going blank every time you sit in front of the computer. The trick is to shut everything else off and let the story flow. For me that meant leaving my cell phone in my room, turning off all internet except any research and, at times, having a glass of wine to shut up my inner critic. It took about twelve days to figure all of this out so most of Rodeo Queen was written in the last eighteen days of NaNo, although I did have the first few chapters already written. Technically, I'm a NaNo "rebel" since part of Rodeo Queen was already written but not included in the 50,000 word count. But I'm okay with that.
What did it feel like to get the call from editor Tessa Woodward, saying that Avon Impulse was interested in acquiring your novel?
My first reaction was that one of my writer friends was playing a sick joke on me. Then I realized that only my critique partner and
my husband knew I'd sent it in several months earlier. In fact, I had all but given up hope of hearing from Avon about it. I remember when I called Tessa the first time, I kept worrying that they still weren't sure if they wanted it and that something I said would make her change her mind, almost like a job interview. She put me at ease very quickly. But, even now I keep wanting to pinch myself to make sure that this is real.
Was it all smooth sailing from there?
I'm not sure how smooth things have gone on Tessa's side but for me, it's been a dream come true. At first there is a bit of "hurry up and wait" syndrome and I really didn't tell many people until I had signed the contract. That's when it became real to me. And Tessa has been great about getting my input for everything from the cover to edits so I never felt as if I was being lost in the shuffle of busyness or taken out of the decision-making process. I actually dreaded the edits most but the suggestions Tessa gave made the story far stronger so I was happy to rework it and they went quickly.
Do you have any advice for future NaNoWriMo participants?
Don't be afraid to be a rebel. The idea of NaNoWriMo is to get the idea floating in your head onto the page in at least 50,000 words. Don't let the word count deter you, don't let something you've already started stop you. You want to write screenplays or essays instead? Just make the time and sit down and do it. Shut off the world and get lost in the story for whatever time you've blocked out that day. If you do it daily, you'll have the 50,000 words easily. The point is that you're disciplining yourself to make time to write - whatever you write - and becoming more consistent at it.
Your novel, RODEO QUEEN, has such a great concept! I understand it's based somewhat on your own history as a rodeo queen?
I was actually a three-time rodeo queen and competed at the state level. I didn't start riding horses until I was thirteen, although I
was enthralled by them all my life. By fourteen, I was in love with rodeos and performed with a horseback drill team. Rodeo is something that gets in your blood. By the time I was sixteen, I was training horses and barrel racing for fun. It wasn't a big leap to compete in rodeo queen competitions (think beauty pageants where your talent is being the horsewoman.) It was easy to draw on my experiences for Rodeo Queen. In fact, one of the scenes in the book (with the rodeo clown in the arena) actually happened to me! There is so much romance that surrounds the culture of rodeo - pretty girls, sexy cowboys, the allure of the "wild west" - that it was a perfect setting for people to fall in love.
Is publishing this book the best "buckle" you've ever brought home? ;)
It is, without a doubt. From my rodeo queen days, I have a lot of prizes I've won - jewelry, saddles, clothing - but my favorite part, by far, was being the "face" of the rodeo. I wanted people to love it as much as I did but I could only reach people who attended the rodeo. Rodeo Queen, on the other hand, will reach a far wider audience - people who may never have attended a rodeo - and awaken in them a love and respect for the men and women who participate.
What are you working on next? I really hope you continue with your fantastic contemporary Westerns--we at Avon feel like we've lassoed up a real winner!
With encouragement from my critique partner and Tessa, I am actually writing another "rodeo" story, about one of the secondary
characters in Rodeo Queen, while participating in NaNoWriMo again. So far, I love the direction it's taking and it almost feels like it's writing itself. Some days I can't even type fast enough to keep up. It has just about consumed my mind for every waking hour - if I'm not writing it, it's still running in my head. There is more than enough romance in rodeo to keep me busy for a long time.
