Just one, thrown my way.
A mad, dizzying rush of desire cracking across the patio, bouncing around my friends, ignoring everything but the heat bubbling between his eyes and mine.
That’s when Quinn O’Malley came into my life.
We were inevitable.
We were senseless.
He wrecked me.
He saved me.
I still haven’t recovered.
Sayo McIntyre didn’t want the complications that came with Quinn O’Malley.
But life doesn’t care what we want. It gives us what we need.

CATCHING SERENITY is the last full-length novel in the Serenity Series.

This is a multi-media novel with illustrations from RN Laing.
Trigger warnings: real damn life.

Just then, despite what I know of him, what I’ve been warned, I truly feel sorry for Quinn. He doesn’t deserve me brow beating him, not here, not now. It's not his fault that he doesn’t understand about the real hardships in life, not like most of the rest of us do. And he’s absolutely right: I don’t know what he’s undergone. I don’t know what it is to feel the double loss of losing your parents, of being stripped away from your home.

I do know, though, that he is truly faltering, that the slip of his control is great and I want to help him, to catch him before he slips too far away. So I do the only thing that feels natural. I kiss him.
Quinn is momentarily shocked, but then he moves his hands on either side of my face, taking me deeper into the kiss, stealing all control from me and my aggressive charge.

It’s only seconds before the windows around us fog up as we battle each other with our lips, teeth pulling, nibbling, tongues slipping back and forth against each other and then I shudder, overcome, overwhelmed that I had kissed him again and had liked it so much.

He moves away slowly, still holding my face, still close enough that his breath lingers on my bottom lip. Then, another shudder and Quinn sits back looking me over like he isn’t sure what to make of me.

“What?” I say when he shakes his head.
“You’re quite a quandary.” He looks out the window again, rubbing his thumb along his mouth.
“I don’t know why I did that.” There’s no need to hide the frustration in my tone or shy away from Quinn’s touch when he moves his fingers through my hair. “I should never kiss you. Not once.”

“No,” he says, his mouth quirking. “You shouldn’t a’tall.” Another glance at me and he looks to his right, watching the neighbor’s youngest son walking their Dachshunds. “It’s because you think I don’t see anything.”
“What do you mean?”
Quinn shakes his head, scratching at the scruff on his chin. “Everyone thinks I don’t see what’s right in front of my nose. But I do.

I see the truth of things. I see it all. It’s in every fighting couple on the sidewalk, every ridiculous discussion. People fight, they row and scream because they are desperate.”  The way Quinn speaks, the listless defeat in his tone reminds me of someone doubting the existence of God. Someone so desperate not to believe for fear they’d have to atone for their sins.
Quinn doesn’t want connections.

I get it. It’s no wonder with the childhood he had, with the apparent contentious relationship between his parents, his father's philandering, all the money given to him but no moral compass, his father’s defection, his mother’s death.  It’s likely why he’s become so close to a little girl who may not have long to live.

Relationships are complications he finds distasteful, still, none of us get through life without having them. No matter how hard we try to avoid them.
His voice sounds lost. “They do all that—fight and row and scream—because they are clinging to the last bit of passion left inside them, because they feel it draining away.”
“That’s life, Quinn.”
“No, love, that’s begging. That’s pleading that the end won’t come. But it always does, doesn’t it? Declan, Autumn, all your barmy mates and the blokes they try to wrangle down, it’s all fecking fiction. None if lasts. Not any of it.”

“So why bother trying? You believe it’s bullshit and you still keep at it, you still try to bed as many women as you can. It’s why Layla smacked you.”
“Who's trying? I'm just trying to have a good time, and there’s not much trying to it, girls fall all over me. But you make it sound like I’m not fussed who I shag. That's your hypocritical assumption. I am. When you get right to it, I’m damn well picky over who I let in my bed. You’re right on one thing, though. I don’t try, not anymore.

I haven’t tried in ages and ages. I’ve seen where trying takes you and it’s not worth the bother. But I’m a bloke, aren’t I? I have needs.  And I’m not particularly shameful about saying what I want. Like you.”
“Aye, you. I won’t lie about it. Twice now you’ve kissed me.” He pauses, daring to deny it with one glance and when I only met his stare, when I lifted my eyebrow in my own small challenge, Quinn smiles. “Twice it never went further than that.” He moves his gaze over my lips, a slow, steady glance that tells me all I need to know about where his thoughts have drifted to. “I’m saying that I’m not shameful about liking your mouth on me. You are.

You’re fussed what the others will think of you should you let yourself give in to me. You needn’t be. It’s not as if there’s a soul here I’d brag to about bedding you. I only care that I do.”
“You’re a pig, O’Malley.”

“That may be true, love, but you’re the one who keeps coming back to this pig.” Quinn reaches out to grab the back of my neck to pull me close to his mouth, and dammit, I let him. “You’re the one pretending you don’t like me a’tall.” He takes a kiss then, fierce, firm, one that makes a quick moan slip from my throat.

And then he leaves me. Again. Sitting alone in that car, my lips throbbing, my mind twisted with the realization that he’d just shown me exactly who he was. And I didn't know if I hated him for it, or wanted him more desperately than before.

Release: Hidden Chapters Box Set by Elise Holden

Hidden Chapters Box Set
featuring One Hard Ride, Preying on You and Four the Night
by Elise Holden

One heart searching for the other. One soul twisted by guilt. Can Olivia and Gage let the sins of the past go so that they can have a future together?

Growing up in a small town in the Midwest, where everyone knew her name and her business, Olivia was untouchable. Preacher’s daughter. Good girl. Excellent student. She was going places and Gage Memphis had no business knocking on her door, but that didn’t stop her from wishing that he would.

Gage knew he wasn’t good enough for Olivia Sinclair when she took notice of him back in high school. Born on the wrong side of the tracks, a lengthy womanizing reputation, dead end mechanic job and the bane of her Daddy’s existence, Gage was all kinds of wrong for Olivia, but she was still the only girl for him. When Olivia returned home for Christmas break from college, Gage was determined not to let his second chance with her pass him by, even if that meant revealing the truth about his past which might push her away forever.

Preying On You:

Most guys had a thing for blondes, perky breasts, and legs that never stopped. Ava Hildebrand should know. She had all three, and men spent a heck of a lot to watch her dance every night. What started out as a harmless way to pay the bills, soon turned dangerous, when a client began shelling out large sums of money for private dances but refused to interact. What sort of man wanted to look but not touch?

Ethan Dorian had watched Ava long enough to know she was exactly the girl he had been searching for. Stunning, a sarcastic tongue, a great set of legs and willing to rise to any challenge. Guys like him had a way of getting exactly what they wanted if the price was right. The problem was...he didn’t want to have to pay for her time anymore.

Four the Night:
People liked to call Vegas “Sin City.” Seemed fitting enough for Cash Madison. By the time he left the glittering lights of the Strip, he knew he would be making regular visits to confession to make up for it.  His friends had decided Vegas was the place to celebrate his 21st birthday, without his girlfriend, and Cash was game for anything, but when a not-so-innocent bet put his pride on the line, Cash found himself goaded into attempting to bed four women in less than eight hours.
What happened in Vegas...sometimes came back around to kick you in the ass.

Become what you believe.

Elsa Fredriksen knows there’s a thin line between love and fear. As High Healer, she rights the wrongs committed by those who choose the darkness. But even Asgard’s secret weapon can’t undo every injury—especially when her fate is completely entwined with the god she’s trying to save.

Elsa’s in love with the Norse God of Justice. But Forse’s heart is ruled by fear—fear that the past will repeat itself; fear that opening his heart will compromise his ability to do his job; fear that he’ll hurt the one girl he desperately wants to protect. Again.

When Elsa faces off against the very monster she once swore to protect, her survival depends on a power she isn’t sure she can control. And when Forse’s worst nightmare unfolds in front of him, Elsa has to decide whether it’s more important to hold the realms in perfekt balance . . . or hold on to the guy she can’t imagine existing without.

Perfekt Balance Excerpt:

“Hold up.” Henrik held out one hand. “Where are you going? And why is Forse about to kill someone?”

We all turned to look at Forse. Sure enough, his eyes were slits, his breathing was sharp, and he had a pulsing forehead vein that rivaled Tyr’s neck one. He positively seethed anger.

“We are going to Svartalfheim,” Tyr answered coolly. The four gods in the room drew a collective gasp.

The mortal took in our reactions with practiced calm. “Which one’s Svartalfheim again?” she asked lightly.

“The worst one after Helheim,” Brynn muttered.

“It’s the realm of the dark elves,” I explained. “When the cosmos was born, the blackest souls were sent to a wasteland—a realm of isolation and soot. Svartalfheim.”

“And you’re all going there?” Mia squeaked.

“Forse, Brynn, Elsa, and I are going there.” Tyr spoke with his chin on Mia’s head. “You’re staying here with Henrik.”

“Elsa doesn’t need to go,” Forse argued.

“You of all people know how delicate this retrieval is. The perp has been a fugitive since…well, it’s been a long time. She’s being harbored by dark elves who demanded Fenrir in her place, and I have no intention of unleashing that beast again. The elves agreed to accept one of the Svartish treasures from the vault instead of the wolf, but they could very well turn on us once we get there. We need a Unifier to make sure this exchange goes peacefully. Right now, Elsa’s all we’ve got,” Tyr finished.

“Um, thanks?” I said.

“You know what I mean.” Tyr turned his gaze to me. “I don’t want to drag you into Svartalfheim any more than Forse does. I know you’re not up to speed on the peacekeeping function, and I don’t like putting you in danger. Not only are you my baby sister, but you’re a Key—you’re one of the gods we train to protect. I hate everything about this. Unfortunately, I don’t have another option.”

“I could go,” Mia offered. Her voice was shaky, but she held her head high.

“No.” Five voices sounded as one. A combination of relief and disappointment flickered across Mia’s features.

“If I’m not ready, you’re definitely not ready,” I reminded her. “I’ll get this one, and once I have a handle on this bizarre skill set I’ll pass the torch to you. I promise.”

“I’ll hold down the fort from here this time.” Mia stared me down. “But I don’t want to be on baking duty with Henrik forever.”

I swallowed. Figure this out, Elsa.

“Hey, there are worse things than baking with me.” Henrik raised an eyebrow. “I never did teach you to make my mom’s chocolate mousse cake, did I?”

Mia looked up with a small smile. “Does she use Mexican vanilla?”

“Tahitian,” Henrik countered. “And I’ve got a stash in my secret cabinet.”

“Now that that’s settled, does anyone want to tell me the name of the perp we’re retrieving from that Odin-forsaken realm?” Brynn chimed in.

I turned to my brother and waited for his answer. When he spoke, his voice was clipped.

The name fell like a lead balloon at a birthday party. Brynn’s mouth dropped open, and Henrik sucked in a breath. I couldn’t see Forse’s face, but the sound of knuckles cracking behind me let me know he wasn’t happy. I could relate.

Oh dear gods. We’re going after Runa.

The room swirled in a violent vortex, and Forse gripped my arms to steady me. As he righted me in my chair, the world slowed to a standstill. Runa was more than just Forse’s psychotic ex-girlfriend. She was the monster who committed the crime—the one that changed everything.

When I finally found my voice, it came out dry and scratchy. “We’re going after Runa.”

“Yes.” Forse watched me carefully.

“And you’re charging her with high treason.”

“Yes,” Forse repeated.

Forse kept his hands on my arms as I breathed through my rage. “Elsa, if you don’t want to go with us we can—”

“We can what?” Tyr interrupted. “We can’t let the dark elves keep her—her crime was against Asgard, and she needs to answer to our realm for what she’s done. Not Svartalfheim. You of all gods know that.”

“I’m not letting her hurt Elsa!” Forse exploded. The words echoed off the marble countertops, piercing the normally calm kitchen.

“I’m not letting her hurt anyone!” Tyr yelled back. “And the only way I can ensure that is if I bring her to Odin!”

“Enough!” I interjected. With my emotions under control, I re-opened my abilities and sent waves of calm at Forse and Tyr. Their chests continued to rise and fall with angry breaths, but their auras reflected a slight decrease in rage. It was the best I could do. “Forse, I understand where you’re coming from. But Tyr’s right. Runa needs to be brought to justice. And since that’s you”—I tapped the justice god with my pointer finger—“and since I’ve got your back whether you like it or not, I’m going with you. Tyr’s spot on; we don’t want this exchange going bad. We can’t let her hurt anyone else. I need you to have that faith in me you promised you would.”

“I believe in you, Elsa. I’ve always known you have what it takes to master this job, even before you believed it yourself. You’re incredibly powerful, and you can do anything you set your mind to. But there are so many forces working against us these days. If anything happened to you, I’d never forgive myself.” Forse pressed his forehead to mine. His concern was sweet, and normally I’d have melted into a giggling mess at the contact, but right now I just couldn’t go there.

“Let’s make sure we’re all safe then. We’ll bring Runa in so she can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of Asgardian law.” I shot Forse a look brimming with confidence I didn’t actually possess. Since the energetic fireballs shooting between him and Tyr suggested they still operated at a six on the anger scale, it was clear I was a woefully ineffective Unifier.

And I had the job of my life ahead of me.
