Release Blitz: The Guardians of Ivalice by Laura Catherine

Title: The Guardians of Ivalice
Author: Laura Catherine
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: June 24, 2017

On Ivalice, Prince Morgan has been living in the shadow of his twin brother and older sister. She will be queen one day and inherit the power of Spirit to protect their world and guard the other elements from harm. Morgan wants this power for himself and nothing will stop him from getting it, not even his family. With her dying breath, Queen Tamsin sends the elements to another world where Morgan cannot have them.
On Earth, Nix, Grace, Kendra and Phoebe are four ordinary teenage girls living normal lives where homework and boys are their biggest problems. That is until they absorb some strange glowing balls of light into their bodies and start controlling the elements.
Everything is about to change for these girls when the weight of an entire world is put on their shoulders.

The bus was old and probably in need of replacing with ripped seats and graffiti on everything including the roof. It also smelled like those tree air fresheners.
She made her way down the aisle to her favourite spot. It was about halfway down the bus, not so close to the front that you had to sit near a teacher but not so far back that you stayed away from the school bullies in the back row.
Nix slid into her favourite seat, the one graffittied in lyrics from her favourite band Chaos Destiny.
“Hello.”
Nix looked up to see the new girl staring down at her.
“Hi,” Nix replied. “You’re the new girl.”
“Phoebe Jenkins,” she said with an awkward smile.
Poor girl, Nix thought, doesn’t know anyone.
“Ah, I’m saving the seat next to me for my friend, but you should sit in front of us.”
Phoebe looked surprised at the offer and Nix wondered if other people had been less nice to her. Hopefully she hadn’t been subject to the antics of the school bully, Jasper.
“Go on, sit,” Nix encouraged with a smile.
“Thank you,” Phoebe replied and perched herself on the seat ahead of Nix.
“I shotgunned the window side,” Grace said as she pushed her way through the aisle of students still taking their seats.
Nix moved out of the way so Grace could claim her prize. Grace was always last to be called for things because her last name was West.
“What did I miss?” Grace said leaning on the back of Phoebe’s seat.
“Grace this is Phoebe,” Nix introduced.
“Ah, new girl,” Grace said with a cheesy grin. “Excellent. How are you liking Verndale?”
Phoebe sat up straight, pushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “It is a very beautiful town,” she replied. Her voice was soft like a gentle touch of fingers on guitar strings.
“Great. Just stick with us and you can’t go wrong.” Grace winked and leaned back in her seat.
Mr. Haynes appeared at the front of the bus, ushering people to take their seats so he could do a head count.
“Now today’s excursion—”
Mr. Haynes was cut short as a dark skinned girl with a shining curtain of black hair raced up the bus steps.
“Kendra,” Mr. Haynes said a little startled. “Where have you been? I called your name a while ago.”
“I’ve been objecting,” she said giving him a dazzling white smile.
“Objecting.” Mr Haynes nodded then did a double take. “Objecting to what?”
“I’m objecting to this excursion. I shouldn’t have to be forced into a swamp against my will.”
“I am sorry, Miss Tate, but there are other places out there besides the mall,” said Mr. Cole, the sports teacher who was accompanying Mr. Haynes on the trip.
The students giggled. Kendra pouted and looked like she was going to argue the point, but Mr. Haynes asked her to take a seat.

Laura Catherine was born in Melbourne, Australia and spent most of her childhood creating fantasy worlds and talking to her invisible pet cheetah who ran along powerlines.

About Dead & Buried:
You ever hear the phrase, about as successful as a soup sandwich? Well, that's me, I’m the soup sandwich, but instead of a soggy mess, you have a twenty five year old with a Bachelor’s degree in nothing useful who just quit her job at the local home improvement store where there were definitely no tortured billionaires looking to tie anyone up--and that's not a bad thing. I know, it's looking pretty sad right about now, but at least I don't still live with my parents…   So, here I am, embarking on a new journey covering the Funerals and Obituaries section of the local paper, the San Diego Metro News, for the editor--brace yourself--my uncle, Sal. Unfortunately, while my parents are on vacation, my Granny and her friends are determined to stir up some trouble--but this time, they may have bitten off more than they can chew--especially when some of the residents of the local retirement community are turning up unnaturally dead.   There is nothing that will keep me from protecting the people that I love, no matter how crazy they may be--not even the sexy, I mean stubborn, homicide detective, Trent Foyle, can stop me.   My name is Shelby Whitmore and I'm kind of the newest reporter for the San Diego Metro News, but hey, I'm a hit with the blue hairs.

Exclusive Excerpt:
“Yes, I need an ambulance at 143 Sunnyvale Road, Unit B. Yes, I’ll stay on the line.” Hey, that’s my address. I hope now one’s hurt. I open my eye and realize two things. 1) I’m lying flat on my back on the kitchen floor and 2) there is a strange man standing over me staring down with a scowl on his scary, yet handsome face. Upon, closer inspection, I realize I am naked and there is a strange man standing over me. What the ever fuck is happening here?! “She’s come to,” the stranger says. “Ma’am, you had an accident, I’m…” But he doesn’t get to finish because I jump up screaming. “A phone pervert! A phone pervert is in my house!!!! AAAHHHHHHHHHHH……” I scream and resume my naked alien running. I run to my adorable cooking utensil cup and grab the first thing I can get my hands on, which just so happens to be a metal pair of tongs. I lunge at the Phone Pervert in my very best impression of a master swordsman, En garde! Clapping away like a deranged lobster. “You! Out of my house, Phone Pervert.” Clap clap. Clap clap clap. “I told you I already have a pervert,” Clap clap. I attack again. Clap clap. “And I told you I would call the police!” Strong arms firmly wrap around me from behind and I jump but they only lock tight around me. “Lady, I am the police. Now put your claws away and grab a robe before I have to take you in.” I let out an Eeep! when I realize that I am naked. My Phone Pervert turned police officer looks over my shoulder and says to the anaconda arms holding me, “Really, Trent, this looney tune is your girl?” “Hey, I’m not a looney tune,” I pout. “I’m just having a really bad day,” I mumble. The thought of going to jail naked has brought back all the stress of my shit day. “What can I say, she’s never boring and Nana loves her,” I feel Trent shrug behind me. “Can you imagine your kids being anything but terrors with her and Marla’s genes combined?” He laughs. “I can’t wait to see it.” “Hey,” I mumble halfheartedly. “But they’ll be entertaining. And beautiful,” Trent adds. “Beautiful for sure, crazy as fuck for certain,” he laughs, “Although standing here now, I definitely see her appeal. You ever decide you’re done with this asshole, you give me a call okay, sugar?” The stranger asks me on a chuckle. A growl rumbles out from behind me and a warm, calloused palm slides up to cover my breast. Another one moves south but I slap it away. “But I don’t even know your name,” I mumble looking down distractedly at the large, tan hand on my boobie. Another growl, this time more menacing rumbles up as the stranger laughs again. Apparently, my life is hilarious. “Detective Kane Green at your service ma’am,” he leans forward and tips his imaginary hat. “Like the hockey player?” I ask, but I hear a groan from behind. “One and the same, but now I’m retired,” he winks. “The old shoulder couldn’t do it anymore so I decided to follow in my dad’s footsteps and joined the local PD.” “I think that’s just amazing,” I breathe. “I’m a big fan,” I blush. And when I say blush, I mean I blush EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE knows it because I’m FREAKING NAKED! “He was just leaving,” Trent barks from behind me. Detective Green laughs and heads for the door. “It was lovely meeting you, Shelby,” he winks and heads off into the night. Kane Green and his shaggy, light brown hair and cold blue eyes are undoubtedly gorgeous, but absolutely nothing compared to the coal black hair and green Irish eyes of one Detective Trenton Foyle. I am so screwed.

Release Blitz: Thursday Afternoon by Beth Rinyu

SYNOPSIS

I'm just your typical working girl who never mixes business with pleasure. Although some may say my business is all about pleasure. For the past four years, I’ve allowed my profession to define me, distancing myself from family, friends and most of all love. Hating the reflection I see staring back at me in the mirror, I muddle through each day with my heart sealed off like a tomb, until two strangers enter my life.

One teaching me the true meaning of friendship.

The other teaching me the true meaning of love.

She’s everything I’m not.

Humble, loving, and devoting her life to others.

We’re an unlikely duo who are polar opposites, but at the same time so alike.

Never in a million years could I be friends with someone like her...until I was.

Then there’s him.

He’s my Thursday afternoon client.

Just like all the others: handsome, rich and charming…yet so very different.

Trying to overcome a painful past, he seeks out my services as a refuge, only to find that we’re opening our hearts to each other in ways that neither of us could've imagined.

I could never fall in love with someone like him...until I did.

And now I'm finding myself longing for it to be Thursday afternoon all week long.

“You’re my new-fallen snow, Simon.”

He stared down at me in confusion.

My thumbs skimmed the sides of his face, with the glow of the moon providing just enough light to make out his perfect features. “Each new-fallen snow is a second chance to get it right. Thank you for giving me the chance to prove not only to you, but to myself that I’m more than who I once was.”

“You’re so much more.” His voice was low and hoarse. “God, I didn’t think it was possible to want you any more than I already did, but you never cease to amaze me.”

He had a right to remain suffocated by his pain.
She had a right to remain silent about hers.

For better or for worse.
Those were the vows that I had taken with my wife six years ago. We had lived through the better and were barely getting through the worse. I tried to face our loss together, while she chose to have an affair instead.
Time apart was what we both needed.
What I didn’t expect in that time was her.
The beauty she possessed on the outside was a far cry from the scars she was harboring on the inside. She wasn’t looking for love and neither was I. She just needed someone to help her deal with the pain she had been carrying around for the past two years, and I was happy to oblige.
I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with her, but suddenly I was seeing a future that I never dreamed of right in front of my eyes….only to find that the past had other things in mind for us.
***
I always believed that we only got one true love in life, and mine was gone and never coming back.
Through the tear-filled nights and never ending days, I was slowly and tortuously coming to terms with the pain that was my reality.
And then he entered my life.
Tall, handsome, genuine and caring, he was a friend when I needed one most. Together, we were a temporary fix to our own permanent pain. Just two people helping each other to get through a very dark period in life.
But when the light begins to shine ever so slightly with each passing day, and his face is all I can see at the end of that tunnel…..do I run back into the darkness or move into the light with him?

Excerpt

Calum needed to fly, to escape the claustrophobic confines of the pub in Inverness. Only flight could provide relief from the stuffiness closing in around him. The stale stench of beer and perspiration tingled his nostrils. The din of voices around him reverberated in his head. The Knights of Stone, the band he and his brothers had created, had played until midnight. Although the lassies surrounded him after their set, as they often did, he avoided their attention to head for the exit.
“You’re not leaving again, are you?” his older brother, Gavin, asked.
“I need air.”
“It’s the third time in a fortnight. Something’s definitely off with you lately.”
Maybe Gavin was right. Calum’s usual restlessness had shifted recently. Instead of chasing the lasses after the rush onstage as front man of their band, he’d been escaping to the wide-open space of the night skies.
He searched the shadowy area behind the brick building for a hidden spot where he could shift to his winged form. Humans were out this evening, but none were attracted to the dark alley.
Calum cloaked himself before shifting. He flew away from the club up toward the crescent moon, which was clouded by a swirl of mist. Nothing like soaring through the night to invigorate him. Flight calmed him, as it did for most gargoyles. While he spent much of the day restoring his energy in stone form under the sun, at night he came alive. He’d then pursue one of his three favorite activities — flying, performing, or—entertaining. He smirked. He and Gavin relished the female attention, especially after their three brothers had found mates. Since their brothers had placed bets on who’d be next to find a mate, both Calum and Gavin pushed to the extreme to avoid it.
Although Calum still burned from the rush on stage, something was missing. He had everything he thought he’d wanted with the band and living with his brothers in their small clan on the Isle of Stone, yet he sought solitude in flight more often.
Why he did plagued his mind as he sought the clarity during the flight. A short break had turned into a longer flight, full of introspection. Calum soared farther than he’d planned, along Loch Ness and then inland. The shadowed mountain peaks ahead framed a foreboding entryway under the lingering fog that clouded the night.

He paused, hovering in the air. His gargoyle instincts flared. Something was off. He engaged all his senses, listening for a sign of distress, anything to identify the source of his unease. He flew deeper inland, the rolling fields darker than emeralds under the stars, and the disturbing sensation heightened.
